list what you have done, your skills and accomplishments
"illustrates your strongest selling points and how they specifically match the requirements of the position. Your goal should be to grab your reader in the top 1/4 of your resume. Customize your summary every time you send your resume out to let that employer know what skills, qualifications and experience you have that they are looking for"

Should I use a Functional or Chronological Resume?

I have been with the same company for 5 1/2 years while going through college. However, I have recently graduated and am seeking a job that has nothing to do with my degree or my current job. (I know. It makes a whole lot of sense on my part). I’m thinking functional to highlight skills, but I don’t want to undermine the fact that I stuck with the same company for over 5 years. A lot of people seem to think that a functional tells the employer there are career gaps, but this obviously wouldn’t be the case in my situation. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Do a chronological….but then do a short paragraph in your objectives statement….highlight your new direction and tie your current position to your future by stating skills you have that have been successfully used in the current position. Functional resumes are confusing, and rarely seen…..
Good luck! (retired IBM exec mgr/psychologist/college prof)

what do you put for functional summary on a resume?

Here’s a sample resume. Funtional summary emphasizes the jobs you did, not the length of service or where you did it.

could you please give an example of a ”functional summary” on a resume curriculum vitae?

I think it is just a condensed summary of what makes you suitable for the position, and it should go at the top of your CV, before you list qualifications/jobs etc.

example: I have 3 years practical experience in a customer service role, during which I gained (example) qualification. I also gained work experience over the summer when I (did whatever job). My work experience is supported by my (8…) GCSE’s/A Level’s which has provided my with the academic basis to excel in (this role)…

Just a short version of what you have that is suitable for the job.

What kind of resume is right for me?

I just started college and I don’t have much work experience. I have been working my fast food job for almost a year and had another job for several months. I’m looking for a part time secretary or office job and I don’t know what kind of resume to create! Functional, chronological, or what?

which ever way that best shows your skills that apply to the new job you’re applying for.

there are some good samples and tips here:
